Sustainability

Sustainability is paramount – we depend on it. To protect our eco-system, to afford generations to come the same culinary experience that we enjoy and to protect our own business model.

Maguro actively supports both MSC product options and FIP (Fishery Improvement Programs) as industry gold-standards to advocate and promote change and awareness.

MSC-C-55293

MSC sustainable tuna is an integral part of our sourcing strategy. We buy yellowfin tuna from the Pacific Ocean that is transformed into frozen loins in Vigo, Spain. We also supply MSC albacore from the local pole and line fishing vessels operating in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. Other boat owners that we work with are working in fisheries that are currently under assessment for MSC accreditation which will further increase our certified supply. In the near future, we predict circa 75% of our tuna sold by volume will be MSC certified.

FIP (FISHERY IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM)

FIPs are also an important to Maguro and we actively support them. For example, onboard our longline fishing vessels landing in Senegal, we teach local Senegalese fishermen how to catch product responsibly by showing them how to use circle hooks. After 3-months of training, they can then apply the same technique used on smaller artisanal boats. We are also working with the local development agency for fisheries in the education of observers so that more coverage can be given to our fleet as well as to others, ensuring optimal working conditions and labor rule compliance.
